Located within Yokohama Park (横浜公園) is Higa Garden (彼我庭園), a Japanese garden with a history dating back more than a century.
Yokohama Park opened in 1876 as Japan's second-oldest Western-style park, after Yamate Park. It was established based on a treaty intended to improve the living environment for foreign residents in Yokohama. Because the park was open to both foreigners and Japanese, it was originally called Higa Park (彼我公園), with 彼 referring to foreigners and 我 to Japanese.
In 1909, management of the park was transferred to Yokohama City, and the park was renamed Yokohama Park. A Japanese garden was created at this time. However, the garden was dismantled after the park was requisitioned by the Occupation Forces following World War II.
The Japanese garden was recreated in 1978 in conjunction with the construction of Yokohama Stadium. In 2017, it was named Higa Garden (彼我庭園) to commemorate the 33rd National Urban Greenery Fair Yokohama.
During the autumn foliage season, the garden is illuminated from 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM, offering visitors the opportunity to enjoy the garden after sunset.
